My Favorite Place

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

I like reading books. I have liked it since I was little, and my passion has not faded over the years. Because of my passion, I used to make frequent visits to the local library. I liked the peace and quiet of that place, and the large number of books available. Unfortunately, the library had to be closed due to lack of funds, and currently they have not opened another one.

Of course I had no choice in the matter, so I waved goodbye to the library and started looking for another place in which I could read in peace. The park looked like a good enough place, and I found a more secluded spot that seemed perfect. People stayed on the regular paths and didn’t seem to come here, so I decided it was perfect and looked forward to coming back the next day, with a good book.

Unfortunately, when I returned, the place was filled with kids running around and playing. There was no way I could read in these conditions. But I also didn’t want to start looking for another spot, because I liked this one a lot. So I started looking for something to help reduce the background noise to a minimum.

Because I am an avid music listener as well, I decided the best option would be the purchase of an mp3 player, to listen to some classical music while I’m reading. I opted for the SanDisk Sansa e280 , and have not regretted my choice even once. The small player is perfect for my needs, and I can relax and read in peace, while using it.

I’ve grown so attached to it that I started leaving my books at home, when going to my “reading” place. I’ve gooten really used to just sitting there looking at the children and listening to music. I would have never thought it possible: me, without my books?

Want A Garden Gazebo? Read This First!

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Gazebos have been around for thousands of years and can be traced as far back as ancient Egypt, 5000 years ago. But it took until the mid 1800’s for them to become popular in the US.

Gazebos have been going in and out of popularity for hundreds of years. Sometimes being seen as a status symbol, only to be outranked by some new status symbol such as the large porches that became popular at the turn of the last century, and again in the 1940’s when large patios were the current rage.

During the 1980’s the Gazebo fever came back strongly, and have been on an upswing since then. The multitude of designs and materials and blueprints along with ready made gazebo kits can make deciding on a gazebo a fun and exciting journey.

Gazebos are most commonly constructed of wood or vinyl. Metal and plastic glass is sometimes used. Bamboo is another material. The gazebos can be open or closed with ornate 2 tiered roofs, with elaborate wood work adorning the entire structure.

Take your time browsing the available gazebos. Or the available blue prints if you have decided to do the construction from scratch. What works with your garden, and your style? An elegant or rustic gazebo? Ornate with intricate design and beautiful details? Or plain and rustic?

So, you see, there are a lot of details you need to work out before you make a final decision on design. Will you construct a concrete floor, or make a wooden pad for the gazebo? Will you want a chimney to add a fireplace for chilly evenings? (Think roasted marshmallows and toddy)The only limit is your imagination. A garden gazebo will bring pleasure and beauty for your garden for many years to come.

Socks - Socks Gossip - Isabella L Dre

Friday, June 12th, 2009

If any one had asked me before this article, I didn’t know where the word sock hop came from. Now what does hopping have to do with the fact that one is wearing socks? I guess there might be another reason why the word sock hop is used, but I can’t think of one. So in trying to figure out how socks got associated with hops - meaning dances at schools - I did some searching on the Internet and came up with some really interesting information.

There must be at least a million other reasons why sock and hops were associated, but then again, maybe there aren’t and I’m just flummoxed. It must be quite the stretch of the imagination to even begin to figure out why and how socks, schools, dances and music all came together as a dance.

I bet if many of you who went through school in the 60s will recall those sock hops, the Friday after school tradition where almost the whole school assembled in the gymnasium and rolled out the records for a dance. I remember that just about everyone in my class, socks and all, headed for that huge old gymnasium to start hopping and bopping to the rocking music.

Man alive that place just boomed with sound and some of the greatest hits of all times, while the floor was packed with kids having a riot. It didn’t matter how the gym looked so long as there was a dance and you got to mingle with the coolest dude in the world - the captain of the basketball team, in his socks.

We couldn’t go in to the gym without making sure we took off our street shoes and boots and left them by the door with the teacher on duty. It was ok if we hit the floor wearing socks or even nylons, but anyhow, that is where the term sock hop came from, kids wearing socks to hop to dance music.

You’d hop into the gym on socks to have fun and you’d hop to the music as well, since 60’s music was groovy dude. Isn’t it great how some of these expressions get started? What a colorful history for socks, the quiet hard working tubes of various materials that we slap on our feet and expect to withstand the rigors of what we put them through. So, do you think this is true?

Out Play Your Opposition at Their Own Tactics with These Ping-Pong Tactics

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Just like any other sport, you need to be mentally prepared for every ping-pong match that you intend to play. It helps if you prepare early on days before the game starts by studying your opponents and finding out what their strengths and weaknesses are. If he didn’t have time to prepare like this, it doesn’t really matter as you can find out what their weaknesses are by playing “The Explorer”.

By playing the Explorer, your tactic is to feel out your opponents by sending him or her many different types of shots. By being an effective explorer, you must use all kinds of shots once the game starts, such as blocks, loops, drives, counter-drives, spins, pushes, and other shots.

By doing this, you will be able to adjust quickly and determine what shots are your opponent’s weakness. Always varied the speed of your hits as well, and use several different types of serves.

As was previously mentioned, this is going to help you narrow down exactly what your opponent strong points and weak points are. When you figure out your opponent by using this method, you’re going to be able to concentrate on sending your opponent also shots that they are weakest against.

For example, if you observed that your opponent is weak on his or her backhand, you should try and give him or her more backhands. Another strategy is by forcing your game to your opponent right at the start of the game and adjust your plays or tactics as you go. This form of gameplay is known as the “dominator” method for obvious reasons.

A dominator will come into the game and use their best shot straight off the bat. By doing this, you will force your opponent to adjust to your shots and not the other way around. Although this can be advantageous for you, you have to remember that you also need to adjust to your opponent’s shots as you play. Not being able to adjust will mean losing the game and many errors.

If you are going to play the dominator, this means that you are going to need to start the game with your best shots and make adjustments that correspond to the responses of your opponent’s shots.

Now, try to figure out whether you are an explorer or a dominator. Really good ping-pong players are able to combine both methods and are able to make adjustments to their opponents shots very quickly.

So whichever type of ping-pong player you are, you need to take the time and learn how to make adjustments to your opponents play so you can defeat them at their own game.
