Clipping Coupons for the Grocery Store

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Everyday, shoppers’ mailboxes and doorsteps hold hundreds of dollars worth of savings at the grocery store. They come in the form of newspapers, sales papers, and circulars. If you know which coupons to keep, your monthly grocery bill can decrease dramatically.

Coupons are not a new rage and have been around since Grape Nuts and Cocoa Cola started using them for marketing purposes back in the 1800’s. With the customers that use coupons today, nearly $5 billion dollars per year is saved.

If you use coupons wisely, and make out a list and budget before shopping, you can save up to 50% on your grocery bill. That’s pretty good savings, just by going through your newspaper.

In order to get the most out of your coupons, create a shopping list first. Afterwards, go through your papers and search for coupons for the items that you want to buy. If you go through the papers first, you might end up with items that you weren’t going to buy to begin with, just because you think you’ve found a “good deal.” You don’t always end up saving money this way and sometimes you spend more.

Your Sunday paper is an excellent source for coupons. Sunday papers generally have inserts as well, which contain coupons for a wide array of products.

If you rely on the Sunday newspaper for coupons, then it might make sense to buy an annual subscription to the paper, rather than to go out and buy it every Sunday. You can generally get a substantial discount on the overall price of the paper this way.

Circulars, those papers that come to your mailbox throughout the week, can also be a source for coupons. Because they come more frequently, you might want to clip them as you receive them and store them in an organizer for later use.

Your Sunday paper, as well as circulars, are good for coupons because they are generally locally based, meaning they are targeted to your area stores. This is good when using coupons because they’re more likely to be accepted.

Also, don’t forget to check the grocery stores themselves for coupons. Some grocery stores keep copies of the stores specials near the entrance of the store. This is also a good way to see what is on sale within the store, even if the papers don’t contain coupons.

Consider the expiration date when clipping coupons, and before using them. You don’t want to check out, only to find that your coupon is not usable.

Lastly, watch for value days and double coupons days, usually advertised in the paper. If you use your coupons on these days, you can get even more out of your savings.

Using Canvas Bags at the Grocery Store

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Canvas grocery bags have recently been making an appearance at the entrance to many grocery stores, selling for about $2 per bag. We know that plastic bags are bad for the environment, but are stores really trying to be more environmentally friendly, or are they just trying to get their customers to buy something else? Are canvas bags really more efficient than plastic bags?

When it comes to your budget, in some countries it’s better to bring your own bag than to rely on the plastic bags the stores give you. Some places charge for the bags themselves. Ireland has put a customer tax on their plastic bags.

Yet, other countries tend to be less dependent on their vehicles than we are in the United States so you find more people walking to their grocery stores or riding their bikes. Fewer groceries are actually bought at one time, although more frequent trips to the market are made.

In the United States, where we have our SUVs, pick-up trucks, and minivans, we tend to fill our carts full and make a couple of big grocery visits a month. So is it even reasonable to use canvas bags for people who shop like this? If you do two or three large grocery shopping trips every month, you’re probably coming away with 10+ plastic bags at a time. How many canvas bags would that take?

Yet, we still know that canvas is better for the environment. Some cities in the United States are now making laws to try to curb our plastic habit. San Francisco recently passed a law making it illegal for large grocery stores to use plastic bags. As an alternative, they offer biodegradable paper bags. Boston is also considering doing this, although some customers allege that doing this causes a new kind of problem with the environment-the cutting down of trees.

However, most customers who have switched to the canvas bags report that they feel good about themselves. They feel as though they are doing their own part in helping the environment.

Although less than 3% of plastic bags are recycled and many end up in landfills, flying through the air on windy days, and clogging city drains, some people have found creative ways to re-use the bags. Some shoppers report that they have used them to line kitty-litter boxes or to use in small garbage cans throughout the house.

Some shoppers argue that plastic bags aren’t as sturdy as canvas bags are the poor quality makes them awkward to use. It takes more plastic bags than canvas bags to hold groceries since plastic has to be doubled for heavy items and can rip on box edges. Canvas tends to hold more weight.

The paper bags of the past might have been more environmentally friendly, like the canvas bags, but they were often unwieldy and lacked handles. This made it difficult for shoppers to carry more than one at a time. The canvas bags of today at least generally have handles, making them easier to carry.

If customers don’t want to purchase a canvas bag at the grocery store, they can always find them online or in other shops. There are many websites that sell canvas grocery bags and they can usually be personalized as well.

If shoppers want to go this route and find one elsewhere, they can usually find some that come with shoulder straps, which come in handy when walking long distances.

Although it does make more environmental sense to use the canvas bag instead of resorting to the plastic bags, it also takes a little more work on the customer. Instead of making large purchases at the store, it might be helpful to go a couple of times a week and purchase fewer groceries at one time. Or, to just buy quite a few canvas bags.

An advantage of the canvas bags is that even though they tend to cost about $2 per bag, they last a long time. If shoppers use them properly, they should last about six months. They can also be washed and some are made from recycled materials.

At the moment, it’s up the customer as to whether or not they want to use the plastic bags or purchase canvas. However, if laws continue to be passed making it illegal to use plastic, it might not be a choice for much longer. In that case, it might be a good idea to go ahead and switch to the canvas bags now.

How To Buy For Cheap Everything That You Need To Decorate A Baby Room

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Having a baby is a great time to explore your creative side as you prepare for your new addition. Many, during this economy crisis, are trying to find ways to decorate the baby’s new room without wreaking havoc on their bank account. Here’s how it can be done:

Decide on an overall look or theme. Picking a basic theme for your baby’s room will help you to narrow down your needs and wants and is really the first step in the money saving process. While picking a theme is good, it is better not to get tied down to one color. You may be able to buy for cheap a paint that will fit into the general color palette for the room by checking the “oops” section of your local paint or home store. There you can expect to get a full gallon of paint for about $4 and, possibly, small cans of trim paint for even less!

Buy wall art that you can mix and match. Buy for cheap pieces such as wall decals or wall borders from the dollar store or that are in the Clearance section of a home store. Don’t just use the decal as it is, cut out designs or create words from the various styles. You may be able to decorate the entire room for less than $5.

To add a little flair and class, consider framing some high resolution pictures that you can find and print from the internet with some cheap, but chic picture frames from your local dollar store. This is a quick and fun way to make the walls really pop without costing your family a lot of cash!

Decide on the room furnishings and their placement. Before you start buying figure out what you want and where it should go. You’ll not only save money, but you will save time. Your baby knows absolutely nothing about what “new” looks or feels like. So don’t get too caught up in that. Focus instead of selecting pieces that are gently used or that you can buy for cheap to do what you need it to do. Any frugal fashionista knows that overbuying is always a bad thing.

Always consider other saving, cost-cutting options like borrowing or endeavoring to buy for cheap items that are slightly used. Your local free paper or free classifieds site is sure to have an abundance of baby items that people are trying to get rid of. Your total expense for your furnishings could be a tank of gas and a little time to coordinate item retrieval.

Finally, buy for cheap the rest of the stuff by checking out your local thrift and consignment stores for items that you may be able to mix or match into your theme. But be creative. If it’s not the “exact” color that you would like, you could always spray paint the piece exactly as you want it for about $3, or buy or make a basic slipcover, and enjoy.

Follow these simple tips for finding deals, steals, and ways to buy for cheap to create the room that you want for your baby without breaking the bank!

Understand The Essentials of Bath and Soap Wedding Favors

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Wedding favors have become a traditional way to thank guests for attending the ceremony and helping to make the day as perfect as possible. There are many different types of favors that can be ordered to fit into any theme the couple chooses. One kind of item that people like having is decorative soaps and bath supplies. This is the reason bath and soap wedding favors really clean up.

Nearly any item that would be useful in a bathroom can become a bath favor. A lot of them are decorative as well to enhance the dcor of the room they are placed in. These can include bath oils and beads, soaps, and items people use to groom themselves, such as pedicure and manicure kits.

Soap favors are normally decoratively shaped pieces of soap in a wide variety of shapes and with different scents. Some have the quality of producing luxurious bubbles that a person can soak in as long as he or she wants. Many have different scents, others are mearly pretty to look at. The different soaps can be shaped and dyed to match any dcor or theme the couple chooses for the wedding.

Bath and soap wedding favors are mostly small, inexpensive items that can be placed at each place at the reception as special “Thank you” gifts for the guests. Many can have personalization added to them in the form of the names of the couple and the date of the ceremony or their initials to make them more unique and personal gifts.

Couples usually find a far larger selection of bath and soap wedding favors shopping online than in local bridal shops or boutiques. The reason is that online stores are not limited to the space on hand for display purposes. They also find that prices are generally lower shopping online than in local stores because of the difference in the competition for business. Due to the fact that online stores have much more competition than local shops they generally have to have lower prices.

Shopping for bath and soap wedding favors can also provide couples with a much needed break from dealing with many of the more important and complicated details of making plans for the ceremony and reception. It is common knowledge that making such plans causes a lot of stress on couples who need a break from time to time as they collect themselves.

Wedding favors are now a traditional “Thank you” gift for the guests that communicate their gratitude in a much better way than just sending out cards after the fact. These are normally given as keepsakes for the guests to keep as mementos of the occasion to help them remember the happiness shared with the couple on their special day. Bath and soap wedding favors can make a clean sweep with the guests as they are given.

Have Your Wedding be More Memorable With Unique Wedding Favors

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Wedding favors have come to be accepted as a traditional part of any wedding reception. Their purpose is to thank the guests for attending in a firmer manner than simply sending out a “Thank you” card after the event is over. They also provide the guests with a keepsake item to help them recall the happiness shared with the bride and groom on their special day. One way to ensure that they make it more memorable is to give the guests unique wedding favors instead of the same items they see over and over again.

Wedding favors are normally just some small, inexpensive gift items that are decorated in a manner to make them fit in with the theme chosen for the decorations used at the location of the reception. One of the most common examples is a pen with the names of the bride and groom and the date of the ceremony imprinted on them. Another is notepads with the same information. There are, however, a wide range of possibilities from which to choose when picking out wedding favors.

Unique wedding favors are items that people would not normally expect to see at a wedding. Unlike bottle stoppers, pens, notepads, and coasters, which are among the more common types of wedding favors, unique wedding favors are often practical, definitely unusual, and surprising how easily they are made to fit in with the overall theme while being very memorable.

Some items that make good unique wedding favors include a melon baller that says “Have a ball,” or a coffee scented candle in a glass and chrome coffee cup. A pizza slicer that says “LOVE” on the blade is another example of a unique wedding favor. These items can be many different things that serve any or no purpose other than being a keepsake to help the guests remember the event.

Personalization is another way to make any type of wedding favor become a unique wedding favor. Having the names of the couple and the date they get married imprinted, engraved, or etched into the items is a sure way to guarantee that these items are linked to this particular occasion and no other in the minds of the recipients. Initials can also be used in the event the cost of spelling out names is more than the couple is willing to pay.

It is important to remember to include wedding favors when planning and buying for the big day. These small gifts say “Thank you” to the guests more effectively than sending out cards afterward. In addition, they provide the guests with something tangible to keep as a memento of the occasion to help them remember the good time they had and the happiness shared with the couple at their reception. Unique wedding favors are even better, because they are items that are not normally associated with this type of event. This makes them more memorable and forms unique links between the item and the couple and their wedding that will act as a reminder every time the item is seen far into the future.
