Mother Nature Working In Garden Wedding Favors or Asian Wedding Favors

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

When people hear of a garden wedding, the first image that appears in their heads is a backyard or a park, with a plethora of plants as decorations. Of course, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having an outdoor wedding, or even using plants as decorations. The idea, however, is to make the wedding look like a natural paradise and not the garden section of the local big box store. Here’s how to use plants at your wedding without overdoing it.

The first consideration should be your guests. Anyone with allergies will be extremely uncomfortable if you have a lot of flowers or other pollen producing plants in their vicinity. How can you combat this? Ideally, you can make sure that the person in question is as far away from the offending plants as they can get. Or simply plan to use other versions of that plant. For instance, if you wanted roses as decorations, you could use the petals instead. For beautiful (but strong smelling) gardenias or jasmine, use climbing vines or bushes that don’t blossom, such as ivy or pine. Remember that your guests are there to celebrate your day with you, and if they are uncomfortable, your wedding will not be the success that you meant it to be.

No allergy problems that you can think of, as far as your guests and wedding party are concerned? Great! Move on to the type of plant you want for your decoration. Roses, again, are a traditional plant, and there are many ways to use them. Miniature versions make very pretty favors for a table, either by putting a pot on each one or by strewing tiny blossoms. Want to be really unique? Get a shot glass for each seat, fill it with water, and place the tiny blooms in there. Now you have a unique and pretty garden favor that won’t be forgotten anytime soon!

Perhaps you want garden favors and a garden based location. This is easily done; all you have to do is scout out your local park. You can call the parks and recreation services department in your area to reserve it; be careful, however, because city events take first priority. Besides, you would hate to plan your wedding on the same day as the founding fathers’ birthday, if for no other reason than it would make things a lot more complicated for your guests!

If you’re lucky, you may live near a Victorian house that doubles as a historical site and has a garden that you can rent for your wedding. Many times, these sites have very beautiful, well maintained areas. They may also be expensive, but guaranteed, they are worth every penny.

Last but not least, what happens if you’re stuck indoors and you still want a garden theme? You can simply decorate the room with a few well chosen plants. Again, to avoid allergy issues, you could do a lovely Asian theme with bamboo shoots in water, or bonsai trees. Cherry blossom sprigs are beautiful in tall glass vases as well. These centerpieces can easily be turned into favors for the table. Just be sure there’s no fighting over them as the guests leave your wedding!

Garden themed weddings can be impressive and fun without subjecting anyone to the miseries of allergies or breaking your budget. A little clever legwork and some consideration of thought can result in beautiful decorations that will enhance your wedding tenfold and make your reception the talk of the town.

What Are Little Boys (And Girls) Made Of? Presents For Your Flower Girl and Ring Bearer

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

You’ve decided on gifts for your bridesmaids, gifts for the groomsmen, and gifts for the best man and maid of honor. You’ve even come up with gifts for your parents. But there are two very special people you’ve forgotten–your flower girl and ring bearer. You remember them, don’t you? The little girl who heralds your walk down the aisle and the small boy who gives the two of you your rings for the ceremony? They may be children, but they should still not be ignored on your wedding day. After all, they’re part of your wedding party too. Here are a few things to consider when trying to find them a good present.

See if you can find a few family members for the children and talk to them about gift giving ideas. Maybe they have some suggestions. They may know things about them that you don’t, such as the fact that Mary likes to write and Nicholas loves to play soccer. They may also have a few leads on things they might need, such as a good pair of socks or a new dress. Helping your little ones out by giving them necessities is definitely an excellent idea, and a wonderful way to ingratiate yourself with the parents and family in general.

You may not have an opportunity to talk to family members or parents, and you may be left high and dry for ideas. If this is the case, then don’t be afraid to ask them what they’d like. Make a list of items and ask them to pick from it. They, of course, will have their own ideas for presents, and in turn, this will help you. Like most children, your flower girl and ring bearer will be only too happy to help you find some sort of gift, and their helpfulness will only increase tenfold because the gift will be for them.

So what happens if you can’t talk to the parents and you can’t get any help from your little ones? Get creative and make a gift for them all by yourself. Cards and cash are always a great idea, as are gift cards for a restaurant or an amusement park. Or perhaps you can take them out yourself and spend that extra time with them. This would also make them feel important; it would be like a party, but just for them! Taking a moment or two to make your ring bearer and flower girl feel special will stick in their minds for the rest of their lives, and they will love you for it.

Don’t leave out your special children– your flower girl and ring bearer –on your important day. You chose the two of them for their special qualities; that sweet little girl and that charming little boy no doubt understand why they were chosen, and they want you to be pleased by their performance. They have to attend all the practices and the dress rehearsals, and remember what they need to do. For all their hard work, make sure they get a reward. It’s a great way to build bridges and strengthen your relationships with them. Last but not least, they will have the pride that comes with doing a good job and many memories that will last for a lifetime.

Omedetou! Asian Wedding Traditions to Make Yours Special

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Many people like the idea of an Asian themed wedding, but many picture a woman in a kimono and headgear, with lots of gold and red kanji as decorations. This, of course, is not the sum and total of an Asian themed wedding. Asia is a lot more than just Japan or China, and this article will give you ideas from all over the continent.

First of all, let’s start with Japan. For a Japanese wedding, you could have your bridesmaids wear kimonos instead of Western bridesmaids dresses. The decorations can be red and gold, both good luck colors in Japan. For the ceremony, you could include the sake ceremony. This is when the bride and groom take nine sips of sake, working their way up from tiny cups to big cups. And don’t forget, in Japan, a wedding is not between a man and a woman-it is between two families. All of your planning should keep this in mind. After all, you’ll be living with your spouse for the rest of your life. Wouldn’t it be nice to include your family and his in the ceremony?

For the favors, you could give guests red envelopes with coins in them. This is another traditional good luck gift, normally given to the bride and groom, but in this case perfectly suitable for the occasion. Or, if you can find them, decorate the tables with small bonsai trees, and let the guests take them home at the end of the reception. This type of garden based favor is twofold; not only is it pretty, but practical too.

China’s traditions are similar, but not quite the same. Try to make your wedding on the half hour instead of on the hour. This belief stems from the idea that couples should start their lives together with the hands of time going up instead of down. A fun one for the bride is the idea of three dresses on the big day. The first one is the wedding dress, worn during the ceremony. The second one is the party dress, worn during the banquet or reception. And the last one is the going-away dress for the honeymoon. Many American brides already change after the wedding, but the change usually involves one other dress, not two.

Chinese favors can include things like chopsticks or anything with the symbol for “shuangxe”, or “double happiness”, on it will work nicely. Dragons and phoenixes are symbols of fidelity and happiness, and work as lovely decorations as well.

Last but not least, let’s talk about a little discussed part of Asia-India. Indian wedding traditions are just as beautiful as other Asian countries, although not necessarily as well known. In India, as part of the pre wedding ceremonies, the bride and her bridesmaids and family get together for a ladies sangeet. We would think of this as a bachelorette party. Unlike the stereotypical American version, however, the women in question meet at the bride’s home and bond with each other. One of the activities includes mehindi, or henna decoration. The belief is that the process is symbolic of the love between the bride and groom, and the stronger the color, the stronger the love. For the ceremony itself, the bride wears (depending on the region) a traditional red salwar kameez or langa as her wedding dress. The best part about these dresses is that they flatter just about everyone! Favors for this kind of wedding can be items like sandalwood fans, incense cones, or even little mehindi kits. Your guests will love the uniqueness and creativity behind each one.

It’s possible to have a beautiful Asian themed wedding without being disrespectful to the culture. With a little research, time and talent, your guests and you will have a wedding to remember.
